There's a lot of information that told about how this place called Bandung. Another said that word of "Bandung" had a nearly structure with a word of "Banding" in Indonesian language. The meaning of Banding is close/near/side by side. The argument has been told in the book of Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language's Lexicon) publicated by Balai Pustaka (1994) and Kamus Sunda-Indonesia (Lexicon of Sundanese-Indonesian) publicated by Pustaka Setia (1996) that the word of Bandung means paired or closer.
Another rumors told that Bandung is from word of "Bandeng"/"Ngabandeng" (Sundanese Language) which means a very wide of puddle. Presumable, phonetically the words of Bandeng had turned into Bandung. Some another told that the name of "Bandung" is a transformed of "Bendung" (Dam).
The opinions of this genesis linked with the moment when the water of ancient Citarum blocked in Padalarang territory by dried lava of Tangkuban Parahu which erupted in Holocene age. Finally, the territory of Padalarang (Western) to Cicalengka (Eastern) (± 30 kilometer) and the territory along Tangkuban Parahu (northern) to Soreang (southern) (± 50 kilometer) turned into a lake known as "the Great Lake of Bandung". But, in Neolithic age, the lake began drained away and the process went on centuries.
Historically, the name of "Bandung" has been known since there was formed the government of Bandung regency in the region where the great lake had been there (third decade in 17th centuries).
